Does Moisturisers Really Help ???

Everyone wants to have the radiant skin like Cleopatra.

We religiously moisturize our skin with different kinds of moisturizers, emollients, creams, oils etc. available in the market. But, has anyone ever thought that why do we even use moisturizers and how our skin reacts to it?

The obvious answer would be that moisturizer helps to make our skin soft and supple. But apart from this, there are many other things also that you should know.

Like our body, our skin has also water thirst. Our skin craves for transepidermal water that seeps from the core of the body through the different layers of the skin and finally goes out into the atmosphere. Loss of this water caused flakiness, dryness, and itchiness to our skin.  There are three different layers of the skin: outer layer (epidermis), middle layer (dermis) and lower layer (hypodermis or fatty layer). Water in the form of moisture reaches the skin via blood vessels. But, blood vessels only supply moisture to the dermis. Moisture then travels through the epidermis and finally gets evaporated into the atmosphere. This evaporation of moisture causes cracks and flakiness in the skin. It is an ongoing process. Dryness of skin varies with different weather conditions. Skin becomes drier in the winter.

Moisturizer plays a significant role in regulating this process by preventing the skin from getting dehydrated. It locks the moisture in your skin and prevents it from escaping out into the atmosphere. It also restores the moisture in the Hypodermis.

What happens when you don't moisturize your skin?

1.Prone to Wrinkles - You will develop wrinkles at the very young age if you don't apply moisturizer on your skin. There will be more loss of water from your skin resulting in more wrinkles and skin diseases like inflammations, eczema, psoriasis etc. Such ongoing inflammation ultimately leads to a breakdown of collagen and thus accelerated the aging process.

2.Dull complexion - Gradually your complexion will become dull if you don't use any moisturizer. The wrinkles you already have will look even worse. During the winter humidity levels plummet and the dry air can dehydrate your skin more easily causing it more itchy and flaky.

3. It will aggravate your acne- People who have oily skin usually think that using moisturizer will make their skin more oily, which is the biggest myth. Our skin produces natural sebum. Oily skin tends to produce more sebum than the normal one. People generally have a misconception that if they don't use any moisturizer on their skin, then their skin will become less oily. It's like stripping oil from your skin, which actually disrupts the natural process and creates the counter effect on your skin causing it to overproduce sebum. To balance the PH level of your skin, you need a moisturizer depending on your skin type. Moisturizing plays a very important role in treating acne, as moistened skin tends to loosen sebum built up inside pores. Not using any moisturizer will only worsen your acne.

4. Exposed to sunburn - Many researchers have proved that bare skin is more prone to the sunburnt than moisturized skin. The harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays can easily penetrate into the bare skin. Moisturizer acts as a barrier against the harmful sun rays that can also cause skin cancer.

In conclusion, the moisturizer has a long-term effect on our skin. The more moisturizer our skin has, the fewer wrinkles will be visible. Our skin will look young and healthy. Moisturizer is a kind of vital juice for our skin. Incorporate moisturizer into your daily skincare routine. Share your thoughts in the comment section.
